In this travel blog inspirations, tips and information on a route through Belize, Central America. Belize is beautiful and different than the rest of Central America. It has the second largest barrier reef in the world including the famous Blue Hole!! Belize has the Caribbean vibe with the Garifuna culture, that is much alive here. These Afro-Caribbean Garifuna people originated with the arrival of West African slaves back in 1653. Today, the Garifuna communities live along the Caribbean Sea; mostly in coastal towns and villages in the Central American countries of Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Belize is on the 2019 top 10 countries travel list of Lonely Planet! Panama is on the same list too, check my blogs on Panama here.
Belize is not a huge country to travel through, which means you can reach easily the next destination within half a day. There is not a big mountain range you need to pass and the main roads are good and not too busy.
I visited Belize during my nine weeks travel through Central America. After Guatemala I went into Belize and got back to Guatemala to travel onwards to Honduras and El Salvador. I made a round trip, in order to travel less and see the most! See here my circle suggestions for Belize depending on what your starting point is, click on the links to get more in detail for the separate blogs.
My Belize route suggestions
- Coming from Tikal, Guatemala start in San Ignacio & ATM cave: 3 nights and follow my route, Belize Zoo, Caye Caulker, Raggamuffin tour and Hopkins & Placencia.
- Coming from the Chetumal, Mexico side start in Caye Caulker: 2-6 nights (or stay for the rest of your life……!!!) and then go sailing with the Raggamuffin tour for 3 days/2 nights . All options open after this, San Ignacio or Hopkins & Placencia.
- Coming from the South; Lívingston, Guatemala or Honduras. Start in Placencia and move up to Hopkins (4-5 nights for both towns). Then depending what you want: Caye Caulker beaches or Maya Jungle in San Ignacio.
- Arriving/departing Belize City; which is located more or less in the middle of Belize. Start where every you want but perhaps the Belize Zoo (1 night) is perfect as your last or first stop to travel onwards from Belize City.
Like I said, destinations can be reached within one day; it is up to you what you prefer, more beach or mountains and Maya temples. Everything is beautiful and you will have a great experience in this UNBELIZEABLE country.
