On the day itself, I shared a taxi to the airport area. This is worth paying attention to, because Georgetown has more than one airport. The Kaieteur Falls flights leave from Ogle Airport, not from the main international airport.

Always double check that your driver is taking you to Ogle Airport. Going to the wrong airport would be a very bad start to the day.

The kind where you are very aware that you are not on a regular city-hopper flight with a coffee trolley and a calm business traveler next to you.

Seeing Kaieteur Falls from the air

When we got closer to Kaieteur National Park, Kaieteur Falls suddenly appeared ahead of us. The pilot flew past the falls more than once, so everyone could get a good view from the plane. That first view from the air was incredible. From above, you really see how remote Kaieteur Falls is, with jungle all around it, the river cutting through the mountains below, and that huge drop of water in the middle of it all.

That was the moment the price made sense to me. You are not only paying to stand near the waterfall. You are also paying for that flight over Guyana and for seeing Kaieteur Falls in such a remote setting.

Kaieteur Falls on the ground

After landing, the heat hit immediately. We had a short introduction, met our guide, and started walking into the jungle behind the building. The walk is not difficult, but it is warm and humid, so closed shoes or sturdy sandals are a good idea.

We visited three viewpoints. Each one showed the falls from a slightly different angle. Kaieteur Falls feels huge, open, and powerful, but not in an over-organized tourist attraction kind of way. There are not many barriers, and that makes the place beautiful but also a little intimidating. Especially if heights are not your favorite thing in life. At one point, I was definitely holding on to a tree while trying to look relaxed for photos. Let’s say the photo looks calmer than I felt.

This is also where you will probably take far too many photos, at least I did! Still, the camera does not fully show how big the waterfall feels when you are standing there. Some places are better in real life, and this is one of them.

The waterfall is the main reason to come, but the smaller details made the visit even better. Our guide pointed out the tiny golden frog, also known as the Golden Rocket Frog, which lives in the giant bromeliads around Kaieteur. We also saw a bright orange Guianan cock-of-the-rock.

After visiting the viewpoints, we returned to the building near the airstrip. There was a simple sandwich and a drink waiting for us. Nothing fancy, but after the heat and the walk it tasted very good.

Flying back to Georgetown

The flight back felt calmer. The falls were behind us, everyone had taken far too many photos, and the light over the jungle was softer on the way back. I just sat by the window, tired but very happy. Back in Georgetown, it almost felt strange how much had happened in half a day. In the morning, you can still be walking around Georgetown Market. A few hours later, you have flown over the jungle, seen Kaieteur Falls from the air, stood near the viewpoints, spotted a golden frog, and landed back in the city again.

That evening, I had a cocktail at Cara Lodge with my Norwegian friend. A very good way to end the day. After that, it was time to pack my bag, sort through far too many photos, and get ready to fly to Tobago the next day.

I had skipped doing a scenic flight in Suriname because I wanted to save that kind of experience for Guyana, and I am glad I did.
