Guyana
Guyana travel guide
Guyana is one of those countries that still feels raw, remote and a little mysterious. It is not the easiest destination in South America, but that is also what makes it interesting.
I traveled to Guyana overland from Suriname, crossing the border near Nickerie and continuing towards Georgetown. It was not the most glamorous travel day, but it was part of the adventure. If you want to combine Suriname and Guyana in one trip, this route is very useful to understand before you go.
Georgetown was my first real stop in Guyana after crossing the border from Suriname. The difference was there immediately. It felt more Caribbean, more colorful and in some parts even more beautiful than Paramaribo. Wooden houses, colonial buildings, palm-lined streets and daily life moving around it all. Georgetown was still chaotic, but it surprised me in a good way.
The highlight of my Guyana trip was Kaieteur Falls. This waterfall is huge, remote and surrounded by deep green rainforest. You do not just stop by Kaieteur. You fly there, land close to the falls and walk through the jungle to one of the most impressive views in South America. It felt wild, powerful and completely worth the effort.
Guyana is not a polished boutique travel destination. It is more adventurous, less predictable and definitely not a classic backpacker route either. But if you like nature, culture and travel that still feels off the beaten path, Guyana is a fascinating country to add after Suriname.

After Suriname and Guyana, I continued to Tobago for some well-deserved beach time. It was the softer ending to a travel adventure that started in Suriname, went deeper into Guyana and finished with Caribbean sea, nature and slow island days. Read my Tobago blogs next if you want to add beach time to this route.
