Komodo Day Trip from Labuan Bajo: Pink Beach, Dragons and Manta Rays

A Komodo day trip from Labuan Bajo is one of the easiest ways to see Padar Island, Pink Beach, Komodo dragons and manta rays in one full day. It is a long day, especially if you arrive in Flores with jetlag, but for me it was absolutely worth it. Not because everything was quiet or perfect. It was busy in some places. But the mix of dry island landscapes, views, clear water, wildlife and that first real feeling of being in Flores made it a day I still remember well.

How to get to Labuan Bajo from Bali

My trip started with a long flight from Amsterdam to Bali. I arrived late in the evening and stayed one night in Kuta at AlamKulKul Boutique Resort. Kuta is not where I would stay for many days, but after a long flight it is practical. A bed, a shower and breakfast before continuing the trip was all I needed. The next afternoon I flew from Bali to Labuan Bajo on Flores with AirAsia. My ticket cost about 54 EUR. The flight was short, around one to one and a half hours, but the change in scenery felt big. From the plane Flores looked drier and rougher than Bali, with brown hills, blue water and small islands scattered in the sea.

If you arrive late in Bali, stay close to the airport for your first night. It makes the next travel day to Labuan Bajo much easier.

Labuan Bajo is the main gateway to Komodo National Park, with direct flights from Bali. I would check flight times before booking your tour, because you do not want to arrive late and leave again at sunrise the next morning. You can compare Bali to Labuan Bajo options via 12Go.

Where to stay in Labuan Bajo before your Komodo tour

At the small airport my driver was already waiting. I had arranged him for five days on Flores, which gave me a relaxed start. No searching, no negotiating, just straight into the car and into town. He brought me to Green Hill Boutique Hotel, where I stayed for two nights. The hotel is above town with views over the harbor and the small islands in the distance. Wooden terraces, tropical plants and simple rooms gave it a relaxed boutique feeling. I paid about 108 EUR for two nights including breakfast for two!

Book accommodation with a view over the harbor if you can. Labuan Bajo is nicest when you can look out over the boats and islands, especially around sunset.

You can compare accommodation in Labuan Bajo on Booking. For me, staying in town was convenient because the Komodo boats leave early from the harbor.

First evening in Labuan Bajo

That evening I walked into town for dinner and ended up at Mandalika Corner. It was simple, local and exactly what I needed after another travel day. Along the waterfront, restaurants display fresh fish on ice in front of the kitchens. Labuan Bajo felt lively but still relaxed. I went to bed early because the next morning would start with one of the reasons I came to Flores: a Labuan Bajo Komodo tour.

Booking a Labuan Bajo Komodo Tour

My driver had arranged the speedboat day trip in advance for about 1,200,000 IDR, around 70 EUR. Book at least a few days ahead in busy periods, especially if you travel in high season or want a specific type of boat. Since 2026, several operators mention advance registration, passport details and changing park permit rules, so always ask what is included before you pay.

Before boarding we registered our names and passport numbers and paid the Komodo National Park entrance fee, which was about 200,000 IDR during my visit. Before booking, ask if the price includes the national park entrance fee, ranger fees, snorkeling fee and lunch. Prices can look similar online, but the inclusions are not always the same.

Speedboat for Komodo day trip from Labuan Bajo

The boat had around fifteen people on board. Several boats left the harbor at the same time, all heading in the direction of Komodo National Park. It was not exactly a private island feeling, but once we left Labuan Bajo behind, the sea became darker blue and the islands looked dry and dramatic.

The exact route can change depending on sea conditions, weather and wildlife. Manta rays are never guaranteed, which makes seeing them even more special when it happens.

Take a seasickness pill before departure if you are sensitive to speedboats or waves. The sea can be calm, but it can also be bumpy.

First stop: Padar Island

The first stop was Padar Island, the famous viewpoint you see in almost every Komodo photo. The boat dropped us close to the beach, and we stepped into shallow water before starting the walk.

Wear sandals or shorts because you often step into the water when leaving the boat.

The walk up is not long, but it is steep and hot. The viewpoint is around 180 meters high, so it is not a mountain climb, but in the heat it still feels like a proper workout. There are stairs, dusty paths and not much shade. By the time I reached the top I was sweating like I had signed up for a bootcamp, not a boat trip. It was busy too, with many boats arriving around the same time. Still, the view is impressive. From the top you see the curved bays of Padar Island, the dark hills and the sea changing colors around the island.

Komodo Islands Pink Beach

After Padar we continued to Pink Beach, the stop I had looked forward to most. As a beach lover, this was my happy place of the day. The sand has a soft pink glow because tiny red coral fragments mix with white sand. It looked natural and soft, especially where the waves touched the shore. The water was clear turquoise and perfect for swimming after the hot walk on Padar.

I swam, looked around and enjoyed the strange feeling of standing on a pink beach in the middle of Komodo National Park. Some places are famous for a reason, and this is one of them. I could stay here forever!

Always listen to the guides on Pink Beach. Komodo dragons can sometimes appear near beaches, and this is not the place to wander off for a solo photo mission.

Seeing the Komodo Dragons

Next we visited Komodo Island to see the famous dragons. This part of the day was a bit mixed for me. Near the ranger station it felt crowded and touristy, with many people gathering around two dragons for photos. I decided to skip the dragon selfie moment. Call me boring, but I like my wildlife without a queue. Once we walked further into the island, it became more interesting. The landscape was dry and open, with dusty paths, bushes and trees where the dragons rested in the shade. Komodo dragons can grow up to three meters long, and they really do look prehistoric.

The rangers walked with us carrying forked sticks for safety. At one point we saw a dragon move much faster than expected. A good reminder that these animals are not lazy photo props. They are powerful predators, and it is their island, not ours.

White Sandbank and Manta Rays

After seeing the Komodo dragons, we had lunch on Komodo Island before getting back on the boat. Then the boat stopped at a small white sandbank surrounded by bright turquoise water. For me this was one of those simple travel moments that stays in your mind. Sun, sea, wet hair and no need to do anything except swim.

Later in the afternoon we reached the manta area. At the first stop we did not see anything, which is always possible in nature. No manta ray checks your tour schedule, unfortunately. Luckily, at the second spot we were more fortunate. Several manta rays appeared below us, slowly circling through the water. I stayed in the water longer with the guide and drifted along the coral reef while fish moved around us.

After the busier stops earlier in the day, this part felt calm again. Just floating, watching and trying not to kick anyone with my fins. Easier said than done on a group tour.

Back to Labuan Bajo at Sunset

Eventually it was time to return to Labuan Bajo. The crew handed out snacks and drinks while we headed back over the water. The ride back was windy and cooler, so I wrapped myself in a towel and watched the light change over the islands.

Bring a dry shirt or towel for the return trip. After snorkeling, the wind on the speedboat can feel cold.

Sunset after a Komodo day trip from Labuan Bajo

The sunset from the boat was a beautiful ending. With the jetlag still very real in my body, I was more than ready for a shower and my bed.

Evening in Labuan Bajo after the Tour

Back in the harbor my driver was waiting and brought me back to the hotel. That is when I was very happy I did not have to arrange anything anymore. After a day on the water, simple comfort feels like luxury. That evening it started raining. I lay in bed listening to the rain on the roof while scrolling through the photos on my camera. I liked that the day was not perfect. It made the memory more honest.

Best time to visit Komodo National Park

The dry season is generally the best time to visit Komodo National Park, especially from April to October, when the weather is usually sunnier and the sea is often calmer. The wet season can still be beautiful, but rain and rougher sea conditions may influence boat trips, hiking and visibility in the water. I would also check the sea conditions shortly before your tour, especially if you travel in the winter months. Currents can be strong around Komodo, and the boat crew always decides what is safe that day.

Is a Komodo day trip from Labuan Bajo worth it?

Yes, a Komodo day trip from Labuan Bajo is worth it, especially if you have limited time on Flores. Pink Beach, the manta rays and the rough island landscapes made the early start worth it for me.

I would not describe it as a quiet paradise day. Padar Island was busy, the first dragon stop felt touristy and the program is packed. If you know that before you go, you will enjoy the day more.

As a solo traveler, I found the shared speedboat tour easy and social. You do not have to arrange much yourself, and the group setting makes the long day feel lighter. I would mainly choose an operator with clear communication and good recent reviews.

If you prefer a slower pace, you can also book a multi day boat tour around Komodo Island. This gives you more time on the water and usually feels less rushed than seeing all highlights in one day.

Practical tips for your Labuan Bajo Komodo tour

Bring cash for the entrance fee and small extras, because not everything can be paid by card. Take reef safe sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, a dry shirt, a towel and sandals that can get wet. Your passport number may be needed when registering before boarding, so keep your passport or a photo of it with you.

Wear light clothes, swimwear under your outfit, sandals that can get wet and a hat. For Padar Island, shoes or sturdy sandals are more comfortable than flip-flops.

Quiet spot with Komodo dragon in Komodo National Park

A waterproof bag is useful on the speedboat, especially when the sea is choppy. I would also bring water, although drinks and snacks were included on my tour. And do not forget your camera or GoPro for underwater photos, because the manta rays and coral reef are moments you want to capture if visibility is good.

Check the current Komodo National Park entrance fee, booking rules and tour route before you book. In 2026, many operators mention higher bundled park fees and advance booking rules, so do not rely only on older blog prices.
