I loved Nice! After visiting Saint-Tropez, Cannes, Grasse and Antibes and of course Monaco, I was ready for my last stop at the French Riviera, Nice. I booked by boat to Corsica from Nice so this was my last stop before heading to the French Island. The main reason why I loved Nice so much was the laidback vibe; not as posh as Cannes and Saint-Tropez! See in this blog my highlights and takeaways from Nice!
Nice is the fifth-largest city in France and is the capital of the Alpes-Maritimes department. Nice is known for its Mediterranean climate, stunning coastline, and vibrant cultural scene; that is why Nice is a popular destination for tourists from around the world. The history dates back to its founding by the Greeks, and it has since been influenced by various cultures, including Roman and Italian, which is reflected in its architecture and cuisine.
How to get to Nice?
By Air: Nice Côte d’Azur Airport (NCE) is very close to the city of Nice (~13km). You can spot the arriving planes of this third busiest France airport, when chilling at the beach.
By Train: The nearest train station is Nice The TER Zou, is the regional rail network serving the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region in France, even all the way to Monaco.
By Car: Driving along the scenic coastal roads (D6007, D6098 and D559) is in my opinion the best way to experience the Côte d’Azur and Nice. However, parking can be challenging in Nice and other cities at the coast.
By Boat: If you come from Corsica or even Sardina you can book a ferry to Nice. Probally there are a lot of other boat options, even a private charter from the port of Nice!
Where to stay in Nice?
I book the trendy Nice Pam Hotel last minute. Be aware that the prices even in September can be challenging. I loved the vibe and retro vibe in this hotel. I could park my car in the garage downstairs which is a big pre of this hotel. I would definitely go back to this hotel because the location is just outside the real center but still in walking distance.
What to do in Nice?
Nice is a perfect base to say a bit longer and enjoy the rest of the French Rivera. During you stay you can climb and enjoy the view of the Castle Hill, spent time on the beautiful beach, stroll through the cute streets of the Old Town and eat in a Michelin restaurant.
1. Hike up the Castle Hill (Colline du Château)
Castle Hill is one of the best spots in Nice to enjoy the panoramic views of the city and the Mediterranean Sea and the Port of Nice. Although the former castle is now a ruin, the hilltop park offers green gardens, a waterfall, and several lookout points. I walked up hiking up the winding paths all the way to the top, but I saw cars too. The climb was well worth it, the views are stunning!! Perfect to walk down and jump in the perfect blue Mediterranean Sea!
2. Relax at the Beaches
Nice boasts several beautiful beaches where you can unwind and enjoy the Mediterranean sun. The public beach starts just next to the Castle Hill all the way at the end of the bay of Nice near the Airport. The beach offer easy access and stunning views and turquoise waters. You can also visit one of the private beach clubs, such as Castel Plage or Plage Beau Rivage, which provide sun loungers, parasols, and beachside dining. A lounger is not a luxury object on this beach, the beach is not a sand beach but all pebbles. Only using a towel could be uncomfortable, so bring your own beach chair!
Bring your sandals or reef boots to this pebbles beach, that makes the walking and entering the water more comfortable!
The tide and shape of the pebbles of the shore makes it difficult to enter the water. There are placed several fixed ropes along the shore to make it easier to get into the water.
3. Stroll Along the Promenade des Anglais
The Promenade des Anglais is one of Nice’s most iconic landmarks. This scenic waterfront boulevard stretches for about 7 kilometers along the Baie des Anges. The boulevard offering breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea on one side and cute houses on the other side. The boulevard has many blue comfortable chairs to relax and admire the beach. The Promenade des Anglais is the perfect place to soak up the sun or get active on your bike or feet.
4. Explore Old Town (Vieux Nice)
Vieux Nice, the city’s historic old town, is a maze of narrow, winding streets filled with charming boutiques, variety of restaurants, and local markets. Stroll through the colorful streets, visit the bustling Cours Saleya flower and local market, and admire the Baroque architecture of the Sainte-Réparate Cathedral. Nice has it all! I haven’t seen one designer shop, but more boutique style and a lot of art shops. I loved the vibe here in the Old town. Trendy coffee shops, Michelin star restaurants and a lot more. The old town has a lively atmosphere and unique character which makes Nice a must-visit destination.
5. Take a Day Trip to Antibes
Nice is an excellent base for exploring the charming villages and towns of the French Riviera. Consider taking a day trip to nearby destinations such Antibes, a coastal town with beautiful beaches and a bustling old town, check the blog here.
Take the train instead of the car! Perfect to chill and watch the scenery and saves you parking hassle!
Where to eat in Nice?
Nice’s culinary scene is a delightful blend of French and Italian influences, offering a wide range of delectable dishes. I spotted the lovely tiny French restaurant Olive&Artichaut in the streets of Vieux Nice. I could eat at the bar without a reservation, but the waiting line was long outside!! Book in advance you will not regret it.
Clay: Hip and Trendy Coffee Café! The styling is trendy and the cappuccino was perfect. Loved the vibe and the meal looked delicious too!
Maranna: Another hot spot in the Old Town (31 Rue Benoît Bunico). I went there for an iced coffee with an avocado and egg on toast for brunch. The location is cute in the small old streets which sun umbrellas. Perfect to watch the people passing by!
In the evening, the street behind my hotel Nice Pam, the Place du Pin and behind Rue Bonaparte was very lively, with a lot of restaurants and activities outside. A lot of bars with music, great vibe to be honest. So check it out!
Nice is a city that combines natural beauty, rich history, and vibrant culture. Whether you’re drawn by its stunning beaches, museums or cuisine, a visit to Nice promises to be an unforgettable experience. So pack your bags and get ready to explore the enchanting charm of this remarkable French Riviera gem.
Time to take to boat to Corsica, but Nice I promise I will be back one day!!!
